Rural Women Hide Their Diseases In Nepal

Duri Bika, a resident of Naraharinath municipality, suffered from severe bleeding while four months into her pregnancy but did not disclose her condition to her family for a week. Her husband only learned of her worsening state when her health deteriorated, prompting him to take her to the community hospital in Kumalgau. Upon evaluation, the health assistant at the hospital urgently referred her to the district hospital, recognizing the immediate need for a blood transfusion. With the assistance of seven young individuals carrying her on a stretcher, Duri was transported to the Kalikot district hospital.

Reflecting on events, Duri’s husband, Ammare, shared, “She was carrying out her usual tasks and didn’t inform me about her condition. It wasn’t until she became unable to work that I became aware of her situation, prompting me to take her to the community hospital without delay.” After receiving three days of medical treatment, Duri returned home. Recounting her experience, she expressed, “I dismissed the bleeding as normal and felt reluctant to disclose it at home, hoping for a natural recovery. After four days, I became bedridden, and that’s when my husband learned about my condition.”

Similarly, Thittu Sarki, a resident of Pachaljharana municipality-2, found herself in a similar situation and is currently undergoing medical treatment in Kalikot. Experiencing bleeding at three months into her pregnancy, she hesitated to share her problem with anyone as her husband was working in India. Eventually, unable to endure the pain any longer, she confided in her neighbor.
